Training, Coaching & RUGBY

  Teamwork
The game is interdependent and reliant on others. Without teamwork, there would be no game
All new team members, irrespective of size, shape, background or ethnicity , should be welcomed and included
  Respect
Mutual respect forms the basis of the sport and we should treat others how we would ourselves expect to be treated
We should hold in high esteem the sport, its values and traditions and earn the respect of others by the way we behave
We must respect match officials and accept their decisions
We must respect opposition players and supporters
We must value coaches and those who run clubs and treat clubhouses with consideration
  Enjoyment
Enjoyment should be the primary reason we play and support rugby union
The game, at all levels, must be fun and entertaining for all involved
Participants enjoy the sport for different reasons
  Discipline
Safety is of paramount importance. Lack of discipline on the field of play can lead to serious harm to self and others
Breaches in discipline will be dealt with by the disciplinary process
Without discipline, there would be damage and injury to participants and a breakdown in authority
We must ensure that the sport is one of controlled physical endeavour and that we are honest and fair
We support our disciplinary system, which protects our sport and upholds its values
  Sportsmanship
Fair play should be observed both on and off the pitch
Participants should be humble in victory and dignified in defeat
We must uphold the rugby tradition of camaraderie

COACHING :

Players are the essential component to the rugby club and their development and retention is vital to its sustainability. Coaches play a most important part in the nurturing and development of players, and should also be nurtured and developed themselves. It is recognised that a good coach and good coaching is more likely to keep players in the game for longer. Good coaching gets the best out of all the players and a good coach will do this by continually striving to improve, develop and challenge him/herself. This can partly be achieved by:

• attending seminars, coaching clinics, CPD (continual Personal Development) events

• observing other coaches

• reading books, articles and web pages

• gaining feedback on their sessions from other coaches, and from players

• reflecting on their own performance

Often coaches are not aware of the resources and opportunities available to them to aid their development, or are under the misapprehension that in order to attend a course they will have to travel large distances and pay large sums of money.

Whilst many of the rugby qualification courses (Level 1 to 3) may require some travel, many foundation and CPD courses can be arranged locally - and even at Mosborough club site - for little or no cost.

COACHING COURSE DESCRIPTORS :

Foundation courses have been established as an introduction to coaching. Both Tag and IRB Rugby Ready courses provide tips and advice on coaching in a non-threatening, informal and conductive enviroment and are delivered by qualified Coach Educators and Coach Developers. These courses are ideal for coaches with little rugby and/or coaching experience and can be delivered locally. The Rugby Ready course is an excellent pre-course for Level 1, and will form part of the Level 1 induction from September 2009. The online Rugby Ready questionnaire will form part of the induction to Level 1 from September 2008 (www.irbrugbyready.com).

TAG RUGBY :

Tag Rugby is the officially recommended version of rugby for under 7s and under 8s. However, it is also used in primary and secondary schools as either an activity in its own right, or as an introduction to rugby. In addition to this, tag is used at many recreational rugby events by adults and children, including beach rugby.

The course will be delivered through a game sense approach, which is described throughout this resource and the supporting DVD. On conclusion of the course, the coach will have achieved:

• an understanding of how to deliver a safe and enjoyable practical session

• a knowledge of how to coach and improve skills through games

• an understanding of the application of a game sense approach

• a knowledge of the rules of tag rugby

• experience of applying of the rules of tag rugby (refereeing).

The tag rugby course lasts for approximatley 3 hours and is practical-based. The course includes a course booklet and supporting DVD.

There is no formal assessment and the course is delivered by an accredited deliverer.

There are no course entry requirements other than the applicant being 14+ years of age and an enthusiasm to provide young players an experience of, and desire for, physical activity which is fun, challenging and safe.

IRB RUGBY READY :

IRB Rugby Ready has been developed to ensure greater awareness of all aspects of safety in the game through the provision of a common source of information and advice, for all levels and types of participation in the game. The course has been especially adapted to complement and enhance the needs of the RFU, SRU and WRU.

Coaches are expected to be able to describe and illustrate principles of safe practice as they relate to, and may be applied in, playing, coaching, refereeing and any other aspect of administration or supervision of the game. Coaches will have an awareness of:

Injury prevention

• Pre-participation

• Equipment, environment and emergency plan

• Warm-up and cool-down

• Physical conditioning

• Lifestyle

• Stability and posture

Technical aspects of the game

• Tackle

• Taking the ball into contact

• Scrum

• Line-out

• Maul

• Ruck

Injury management

• On-field injury management

• Emergency plan

The workshop is 3 hours in duration, is modular and interactive in design and is intended to provide a minimum standard of awareness and good practice. The intended learning outcomes will only be achieved if and when all participants in the workshop follow through with implementation after the workshop is over and they return to their club or union. In that sense, the Rugby Ready programme is about the ongoing implementation of safe practices, and continuous learning and improvement.

There is no formal assessment and the course is delivered by an accredited deliverer.

Applicants should be 16+ years of age, although anyone can complete the online questionnaire (www.irbrugbyready.com).
